Fishing System

Fishing is one of the most relaxing and profitable activities in Avalonia. Earn coins, collect rare fish, and build your wealth by the water.

What You Need to Fish

Fishing requires three essential things:

1. Fishing Rod (Required - Equip as weapon)

• Wooden Fishing Rod — 700 coins. Starter rod, lasts 220-250 casts. No bonuses.
• Iron Fishing Rod — 3,500 coins. Lasts 280-320 casts, 25% shorter wait for a bite, +30% reaction window.

Both rods break for good once they run out of casts, but you salvage fragments when they do.

2. Bait (REQUIRED - You CANNOT fish without it!) Bait is mandatory. If you try to fish without bait, you’ll get an error message and won’t be able to cast.

The system automatically picks the best bait you are carrying. Full table further down.

3. A Fishing Location (Stand next to water)

• Docks (public, up to 5 players, social bonus + 1.5x rare fish)
• Rivers, lakes and coast (no social bonus)

How to Fish - Step by Step

Step 1: Prepare
Equip your fishing rod as your weapon and ensure you have bait in your inventory.

Step 2: Find a Spot
Navigate to water and stand facing it. You can fish alone or with friends at a dock.

Step 3: Cast Your Line
Press Space/Click (Attack button) to cast. You’ll see: “Casting your line…”

Step 4: Wait for a Bite (3-8 seconds)
DO NOT MOVE! Even the smallest movement will scare the fish away. If you move, the fishing session is cancelled immediately.

Step 5: React When Fish Bites!
You’ll see: “A fish is biting! Press X to reel it in!”
Your character enters fighting animation. Now you have 2-3 seconds to press X (your secondary button).

Step 6: Land the Fish
If you reel in time, the fish is yours!
You’ll see: “You caught a [Fish Name]!”
Your character performs the catch animation and the fish is added to your inventory.
Your bait is consumed (you’ll need more for the next cast).

If You’re Too Slow:
Message: “You were too slow. The fish got away.”
Your bait is still consumed. Try again!

The Dock System - Fish With Friends

Docks are special fishing locations where you can fish with up to 5 players at once.

Why Fish at a Dock?

Fishing at a dock gives you Social Bonuses that multiply with each friend fishing nearby:

Social Bonus Formula:

Every player fishing in the same dock adds +3% catch rate for everyone, capped at +12%.

On top of that, simply fishing in a dock applies a flat 1.5x rare fish multiplier, with or without company.

Dock Capacity

Each dock holds 5 players. If it is full you will see:
“This dock is full. No social bonus. (5/5)”

You can still fish there — you just lose the social bonus.

Why You Should Fish at Docks with Friends

✅ Bonuses stack with everything else - Social bonus multiplies with your rod bonus, bait bonus, and time bonus
✅ Great for grinding rare fish - The more bonuses you stack, the more rare fish you catch
✅ Fun multiplayer activity - Chat with friends while fishing
✅ Economics - More players = more fish entering the economy = prices might drop but volume is higher
✅ Community - Build friendships and coordinate fishing sessions

Dock Fishing Strategy:

1. Find a friend also fishing or invite one
2. Both go to the same dock
3. You both get +6% between you
4. Bring two more = +12% for everyone, which is the cap
5. Fish together and share profits

Bait System Details

How Bait Works

1. You must have bait in your inventory to fish
2. System automatically uses your best bait (highest bonuses)
3. Each cast consumes 1 bait - successful catch or failed attempt both consume it

Bait Types & Bonuses

Every bait does two separate things: it raises your catch rate (chance the fish lands) and it applies a rare multiplier (chance the fish is a rare variant). They are independent — the highest catch rate is not always the best rare hunter.

Read the rare column carefully. Crickets have a better catch rate than the insect baits but a worse rare multiplier, so they are the wrong pick if you are hunting rares. Anything below Shrimp actually multiplies your rare chance down — only Shrimp and above push it up.

Golden Lure is the only bait with a 4x rare multiplier and it is the clear choice when you are farming rare fish to sell.

Getting Bait

• Worms — dig them up with a shovel, or buy them for 3 coins
• Dragonflies, Frogs, Butterflies — caught with the Bug Net
• Shrimp, Live Minnow, Golden Lure — bought with coins
• Mystery Boxes — can contain 10-30 worms or 5-15 crickets

Bonuses & How They Stack

All bonuses multiply together for maximum fishing power!

Rod Bonuses

Base wait for a bite is 3-6 seconds and the reaction window is 2.5 seconds.

• Wooden Rod — no modifiers
• Iron Rod — 25% shorter wait, +30% reaction window (3.25s instead of 2.5s)

Bait Bonuses

Base catch success is 80% before any bonus.

• Catch rate adds to that 80%
• Rare multiplier scales your chance of a rare variant
• Example: Golden Lure = 80% + 25% success, and 4x rare

Dock Bonuses (Social)

• +3% per player fishing in the same dock
• Capped at +12%
• Docks also apply a flat 1.5x rare fish multiplier
• Only works at docks, not rivers or lakes

Time Bonuses (Day/Night Cycle)

Night is the best window and needs no special bait — any bait works.

Ping Compensation

The system automatically compensates for your ping (latency). Higher ping players get a slight bonus to reaction time to keep things fair!

Example: Maximum Bonuses

• Iron Rod: 25% shorter wait, +30% reaction window
• Golden Lure: +25% catch, 4x rare
• Dock with 3 others: +12% social, plus the dock’s 1.5x rare
• Night (21:00-04:00): +30% rare
• Raining: another 2x rare

Stack all of it and your rare multiplier compounds hard — but rain also costs you 10% catch rate and burns durability twice as fast.

Weather, Trash and Mystery Boxes

Fishing in the Rain

Rain is the single biggest rare-fish window in the game, at a real cost:

• 2x rare fish
• 15% chance a Mystery Box spawns (up from 1%)
• 2x durability loss — your rod dies twice as fast
• -10% catch success rate

Worth it when you are hunting rares with good bait. Not worth it for casual grinding.

Mystery Boxes

A box can surface while you fish — 1% per cast normally, 5% while raining. It sits there for 30 seconds before disappearing, so grab it immediately. Contents range from squid hats and beach sunglasses through coins and bait, up to the rare Phantom Captain hats.

Trash Loot

Around 60% of casts pull up junk instead of fish: old shoes, broken pots, broken bows. All of it sells, so it is not wasted — just budget for it when you estimate profit.

Pro Tips for Success

1. Stay Still While Fishing

• Do not move once you cast, even slightly
• Fish = scared = session cancelled
• Tip: Turn off auto-walk before fishing

2. Fish at the Right Time

• Night = best rare fish rates (+25%)
• Evening is also good (+15%)
• Check in-game messages for time bonuses

3. Use Premium Bait

• Golden Lure costs 150 but is the only 4x rare multiplier in the game
• Anything cheaper than Shrimp multiplies your rare chance down
• If you are farming rares, cheap bait is a false economy

4. Fish at Docks with Friends

• Each player in the dock adds +3% for everyone
• Four players hits the +12% cap
• Docks also give a flat 1.5x rare multiplier even when solo

5. Upgrade Your Rod Early

• The Iron Rod pays for itself: 60 more casts, shorter waits, wider window
• Keep every Rod Fragment — 4 of them plus 50 coins buys a replacement rod

6. Time Your Sessions

• Fish when rare fish are active (night)
• Fish at docks when friends are online
• Stack all bonuses for maximum profit

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Fishing Without Bait - You can’t fish without it. Buy it first.
❌ Moving While Waiting - Fish gets scared and session ends. Stay still!
❌ Reeling Too Early - Wait for the “BITE!” message before pressing X.
❌ Reeling Too Late - You have a limited window. React quickly (2-3 seconds).
❌ Throwing Away Rod Fragments - 4 fragments plus 50 coins is a new rod. Binning them costs you 650.
❌ Fishing Alone When Friends Are Online - Share a dock for +3% each, up to +12%.
❌ Using Bad Bait for Rares - Anything below Shrimp lowers your rare chance instead of raising it.

Make Money from Fishing

Beginner Strategy

• Buy: Wooden Rod (700) + Worms (3 each)
• Dig your own worms with a shovel to fish for free
• Sell everything, including the trash loot
• Result: Slow but zero-risk income

Mid-Level Strategy

• Upgrade to: Iron Rod (3,500) + Shrimp (40) or Live Minnow (80)
• Fish from a dock — 1.5x rare before any friends show up
• Live Minnow is the first bait with a serious 2.2x rare multiplier
• Result: Good steady income

Advanced Strategy

• Use: Iron Rod + Golden Lure (4x rare)
• Fish at night, 21:00-04:00 (+30% rare)
• From a full dock (+12% social, 1.5x rare)
• In the rain if you can take it (2x rare, but 2x durability and -10% catch)
• Stockpile fragments so rod breaks cost 50 coins instead of 700
• Result: The highest rare-fish density available

FAQ

Q: Do I absolutely need bait to fish?
A: YES. Bait is mandatory. Without it, you cannot cast your line.

Q: How long does one fishing session take?
A: 10-30 seconds on average. Faster rods = shorter waits between fish.

Q: Can I fish while moving?
A: No, you must stay completely still. Any movement cancels the session.

Q: Do I need friends to fish?
A: No, solo fishing works fine! But fishing with friends at docks gives you bonuses.

Q: Which rod should I buy first?
A: The Wooden Rod at 700 coins to learn the timing, then the Iron Rod at 3,500 once you are farming seriously. The Iron Rod pays for itself: shorter waits, a wider reaction window, and roughly 60 more casts per rod.

Q: When do fishing rods break?
A: After a randomised number of casts — 220-250 for the Wooden Rod, 280-320 for the Iron Rod. You never see the exact number, so treat the low end as your planning figure. Fishing in the rain burns durability twice as fast.

Q: My rod broke. Can I repair it?
A: The broken rod itself is gone, but you salvage 1-2 Fishing Rod Fragments when it snaps. Take 4 fragments plus 50 coins to the Rod Repair NPC and they will hand you a new Wooden Fishing Rod. That is 50 coins instead of 700, so always keep your fragments — you can also sell spares for 15 coins each if you have plenty.

Q: Do different baits work better at different times?
A: No bait is time-locked. Any bait works at any hour — the time of day changes your rare chance, not which bait you can use.

Q: What’s the best way to get rare fish?
A: Golden Lure (4x rare), fishing at night between 21:00 and 04:00 (+30%), from inside a dock (1.5x), and ideally while it is raining (another 2x). Rain costs you 10% catch rate and double durability, so bring fragments.

Q: Can my friends and I all fish at the same dock?
A: Yes, up to 5 players. Each one adds +3% catch rate for everybody, capped at +12%. A sixth player can still fish there, they just get no social bonus.

Q: I keep pulling up old shoes and broken pots. Is something wrong?
A: No, that is the trash loot table and it is common. Old shoes, broken pots and broken bows all sell, so it is not a wasted cast.

Q: Do I lose bait when I fail to catch a fish?
A: Yes, bait is consumed whether you catch or fail. Each cast costs 1 bait.
